Rapscallion Rogue Eatery

Rapscallion Rogue Eatery - 61 Young Street, Hamilton, ON

We have been wanting to try Rapscallion for a while after friends had been there and recommended it.  This is another unique restaurant in Hamilton where the menu changes daily and the dishes are smaller and shareable portions perfect for two people.
Bacon Wrapped Monkfish
Brussels and Bacon

Kale and Sweet Potato

Beef Cheek

Heirloom Beet Shepherds Pie
It gives you the opportunity to sample and taste a variety of food.  They have the menu printed on a chalkboard and on the windows!

I have to say we were really impressed with the service at Rapscallion.  They got us seated quickly and for a smaller restaurant the tables are set up so you have some privacy from your neighbors.  The servers were excellent and were there to explain more about the menu selections as we made up our mind on what to eat.

From meat and fish to vegetarian dishes there are many items to choose from.  For us to select 5 to try it was hard because we wanted to try them all.

We selected the Bacon Wrapped Monkfish, Brussels and Bacon, Kale and Sweet Potato, Beef Cheeks and Heirloom Beet Sheppards Pie.  All were awesome and after eating those five dishes we were stuffed.  It was actually just enough food.

We are really enjoying this type of restaurant where we can try several things on the menu.  Rapscallion is unique and a must try in Hamilton.

FSH and CHP - 47 King William Street, Hamilton ON

This was our second visit to Fsh and Chp.  I would definitely recommend this restaurant.  It is small and only seats about 20 people so you may have a bit of a wait for a table.  We leave our name and then go next door to The Baltimore House for a drink (I recommend you check out The Baltimore House which is a unique retro style pub).

We go a bit later for dinner (between 7:30-8:00) and the wait is not as long.   The decor of course is a nautical theme and although it is small you don't feel like you are sitting on top of other diners.

The menu has just the right amount of selections of fish and seafood dishes.  The food is top quality here and for the price, you will not find fish and seafood options like this anywhere else in Hamilton.

We ordered the Baked Crab Dip ($14) and Bacon and Beer Mussels ($13) to share between the four of us.  Both were excellent!  The flavor of the mussels with the bacon was so good and the size of the crab dip had us needing more crustini bread in order to finish it off.

For main courses we tried the Crispy Fish Tacos ($12), 2 piece order of Haddock and Chips ($14), and the Lobster and Linguini special ($17).  We all enjoyed our meals!

For the atmosphere, drink and food choices, the taste and the price, Fsh and Chp is a must try in Hamilton.

The Burnt Tongue

The Burnt Tongue - 10 Cannon Street East, Hamilton, Ontario
http://www.theburnttongue.com/

Today we tried The Burnt Tongue (Cannon St. location).  Homemade soups make up their menu but they also have salads, burgers, sandwiches and fries.  The restaurant is small inside and even at 2pm it was steady busy.  You order at the counter then grab a table.  There is staff there to help find you a table if you decide to eat in.

Soup sizes are small, medium and large and are priced by size and the type of soup you order (A, B or C from the menu).  We ordered the Beet and Coconut (medium = $8) and the Filipino Ginger and Chicken (medium = $9) and shared the French Onion Grilled Cheese ($5).

We enjoyed our soups and the sandwich!  This was the perfect lunch on such a cold winter day.

Lake Road Restaurant

Lake Road Restaurant - 229 James Street North, Hamilton ON

http://www.lakeroadrestaurant.ca/

We have been wanting to try Lake Road after we learned that the chef, Dan Megna, also operates Twisted Lemon in Cayuga, ON.  A few of our friends had tried it and enjoyed it as well.

It is bigger than it looks from the outside and is beautifully decorated.  The ceiling is done with tin tiling which adds to the decor.  They have a separate room with seating towards the front of the restaurant and we were lucky to have a table there.

Chorizo Stuffed Calamari

Cod Fritters
Avocado Flan

Lamb Shank
They also have space heaters around the perimeter of this room so you stay warm and comfortable.  The chairs are super comfortable as well.

Not a huge menu but still a variety to choose from as far as entrees and appetizers go which are not over priced in comparison to other restaurants.  There was also a feature menu with a duck dish, venison dish and a swordfish entree.

Shared between four people we had the Cod Fritters and Chorizo Stuffed Calamari.  These were both excellent.  The Cod Fritters were salty but I didn't mind the salty flavor.  We would recommend the Lamb Shank and I decided to try the Avocado Flan for something different.  The Avocado Flan was crispy on the outside and had not much flavor itself but it came with loads of awesome vegetables (carrots, rapini, cauliflower, green beans and king oyster mushrooms).  The vegetables were cooked to perfection and the great flavors in this dish came from the sauces on the plate and the chutney as well.

The wait staff let us take our time and we were not rushed at all.  The presentation for every dish was beautiful which you will see with the pictures.  A dinner for two including drinks for under $100 is worth it when you are served food like we had at Lake Road.  We will go back for sure.
